i remember ~ Andrew Allan

[in memory of JUSTIN MAREE a friend]

i remember our fun times together
from first to our last
memories forbidden from being disremembered
a declaration established by philotes herself
for we were friends meant to be
no matter time apart nor count of words pronounced

i remember searching for and painting pinecones
during each occasion hypnos had lost his clasp on us
as we were raiders uncovering our latest catch
artists crafting our supreme masterpiece
heroes leaving legends in that very daycares walls

I remember descending wet grassy hills on cardboard
during the prepared appearance of zeus
impersonating snowboarders
snowboarders we so desperately desired to be

i remember comparing and sharing games
like spies distributing secrets from within the matrix
while loki chuckled at our adjacent

i remember experimenting on our skateboards
with hermes influencing us to reach unattainable speeds

i remember watching over you from a distance

What Is Death ~ Nkazimulo Mvemve

What is death, if it is not, the cruel prankster
that pulls the rug from beneath your feet?
If it is not, the violented safety of your apartment
complex? It comes and goes as it pleases.

What is death, if it is a sweet dream,
just waiting for you to be woken up?
If it is the Heaven or the Hell you believe in?
If it calls on a person, telling you 'they're dead'?

What is death, if it is peace?
If it is the end of pain and suffering.
If it rest from old age...?
If it is life in a spiritual plain?

What is death, if it is beauty?
The life of death, and the death of life.
What is death, if it is the silhouette of a
woman dressed in white, ready to embrace you?

We're All Dead ~ Siyabonga Dlamini

Welcome to our world
we're all dead here
we spend each day breaking our own hearts
and shedding endless tears
The world of those holding on to broken promises
and endless heartache
Where the hidden sorrow is as real
as the smiles are fake

Welcome to our world
we're all dead here
Holding on to memories
of those who have long forgotten us
but to us, they are still dear
Where we constantly contemplate
what was, what could have been and what is
Where we deeply hate ourselves
and find it hard to forgive

Welcome to our world
we're all dead here
where moving forward seems impossible
and is our greatest fear
where we always endlessly relive our past
with the lovers who are ours no more
and remind ourselves of how our actions
caused them to go

We constantly weep, grieve and lament
The suffering seems to know no end
Welcome to the land of the broken
Welcome to the land of endless tears
Welcome to our world
We're all dead here...

Thoughts on Suicide ~ Nkazimulo Mvemve

There was a time when I had had enough
There was a time when it was a bit rough
There was a place where I made a small salty puddle
There was a place where I hid my trouble
There was a day when I had my head down
There was a day when I didn't smile, when I didn't frown
There was a night where I sat in the darkness
There was a night where the stars were not seen
There was a person whom I'd miss when the time had come
There is a memory I have that can never be undone.

I saw the rope in my head
I saw the knife in my bed
I thought of all the ways to stop my heart
Spill my blood
Break my neck, spine,
And anything else that is tied to my life.

There was a moment when time slowed down
I imagined the gun in my hand
The gun near my head
the barrel on my skull and trigger pulled back.

I imagined death, my death
I saw myself fall with my eyes closed
Very slowly, with a hard thump
The pool of red grew
I looked at my lifeless body: no pulse, no breath, nothing...

I came back and saw my surroundings: the green, the blue, the yellow
And the colourful land in front of me was rich with life.
I thought of the funeral: who will attend and who will not?
Who will put effort into making salty water because of heavy emotion?
Who will be there when I go down?
Who will shovel sand on my new home?
Who will decorate my new patch with bright colourful flowers?
Who will miss me?
So suicidal...

Faceless: Five poems by Uwais Coetzee

Faceless

She flowed on thoughts of others,
never thinking on her own.
She'd always ask for opinions.
Alone she would never have flown.
She would always seek approval
in the yeses of another.
If she were at home
she'd simply ask her mother.
"Is this dress fine?" "Is my makeup good?"
"Do I look nice today?"
She relied on others for hope and smiles.
She'd have it no other way.
She wore the faces of others.
Showing her true self to no one.
She followed the crowd , like part of the herd,
if they ran , she would run.
She told no one of her inner struggles
and left the nest to fly.
But in her 18 years , she had learned nothing,
she realized with a sigh.
By following the crowd you only learn
how to run away from the truth.
Now she was seeing her real self,
like the photos from a photo booth.
She had no more friends , she was alone,
everyone had walked their own way.
She was lost, confused , because she
never lead the pack a single day.
She wore the faces of others.
Never revealing her face to the sun.
Always in the shadows of the rest,
until she picked up the gun.
It was her funeral , she was alone
and no one but the pastor came.
She was buried under a blank tombstone,
because nobody knew her name.

Darkness

As the light disappears
And the darkness is what you embrace.
No sight , no views all that's left
Is feeling on the darkness' face.

I learned from Dumbledore that
Happiness is found when we turn on the light.
But sometimes the light is gone and nothing is in sight.

When something is lost
all that's left is a hole.
No remembrance, no nothing.
Just the darkness of your soul.

When you lose all feeling
and your heart becomes lame.
You will say:"I was in the darkness,
so the darkness I became."

Buried

He ran away from everything.
Feelings , emotions and life.
He took no responsibility.
He worried about no strife.
He ran and ran and left his home,
learning only how to escape.
He left all remembrance of his old life behind.
And only had his ignorance as his cape.
His ignorant bliss was a skill to master,
that most still needed to learn.
He escaped in a cold, hard shell
but for warmth he started to yearn.
He longed for love and the experience it brought
and strangely the worries too.
He had went along, experiencing no pleasures
and knew only that the sea was blue.
His empty life had left him alone
and needed to find "The One".
But he knew nobody.  He was alone.
Because he was always on the run.
One day he decided to stop and look
at the mess his lifestyle had made.
He looked around , his troubles were there,
and weren't soon going to fade.
The moral of his life was don't run away
for you simply will never thrive.
You wouldn't want to become like him ,
who's troubles Buried him alive.

Dark Sky

Thrown into this world
without an ounce of consideration.
It must learn how to fly or
face eternal damnation.
"Learn how to fly." Mother bird said
"Or you'll get eaten by the cat."
"Fly or die." is what she meant.
What kind of love is that?
Here I stand, watching this bird
get thrown into life today.
Kicked from its home, made to fend alone
in the cold harsh month of May.
Smiling to herself because she was free,
the mother didn't even care.
Flying alone , I saw it cry
because life simply wasn't fair.
Here I stand, watching it disappear.
Slowly I watch it die.
Flying alone, flying into nothingness.
Flying into the Dark Sky.

Eternity

We don't live forever.
People do die.
Time continues ,
It simply skates by.
We lose track of our time
or rather it leaves us behind.
We spend our time doing stupid things
But soon enough we'll find
that time has passed
and we are older
having regrets for not being bolder.
We lose our youth
too fast to contemplate,
'Time has passed at
an alarming rate'.
We lost the chance
to spend time together
because we wasted time
that is gone forever.
Now the tables have turned
like the hands on a clock
and we know only
the last tick tock.
If I could go back to
spend my time with you
I'd choose a simple amount
Eternity , times two.

Oblivion ~ Vincent Moloi

I've walked this earth with oblivion as my only friend
Everything I've done in my life he was with me
He kept me safe and he made sure I didn't have any dreams
Because with dreams also comes nightmares
He made sure I didn't forget him

I walked this earth with oblivion as my greatest fear
I didn't really have much of a life
Because he would always introduce me to new people
He would always whisper to in my ear
Saying darkness and fear are the only people that care

I walked this earth with oblivion
He was taking me somewhere
So with no one else in my life I followed him
When I realised that he was bringing me closer to death
Death snatched me
He told everything is going to be okay
And he said he was going to be my new friend.

A Skeleton in the Floor ~ Nishka Ramkhelawan

Time's starving hand stole
your soul away from this
life quenching world.

The frame which once
held your vivacious body so
perfectly together
remains utterly
unresponsive.

You were robbed of
your time here.
And now we are
left vacant and empty
like Satan's impassive
heart.

There was once a girl
who was so vibrant.
Her powdery, pallid body
now swathes the river floor.

Not Yet ~ Uwais Coetzee

I heard about the accident
before I went to bed,
about how the car looked
as it was dripping red.
It was a ten car pileup
on highway 93,
and from all those people
the one who pulled her out was me.
Out of all the bones in her body
she'd broken 45.
The doctor came out looking grim and said
"By tomorrow she won't be alive."
I couldn't believe what I heard
or what the doctor had said
I needed to be with her and
sit next to her bed.
I sat by her bed
and watched her sleep
and by 7 a.m.
I heard the long beep.
We prepared the funeral
to lay her down to rest.
I thought about my life
and how it was a mess.
It was a funeral
that nobody wanted to miss.
We stood up one by one,
to each give a kiss.
I stood up and
kissed her forehead.
But as I leaned in she whispered
"Save me, I'm not dead."

A Graveyard ~ Nsiki Gwala

A Graveyard

The dead lie still in
the cold dark earth.
A massive stone marks the dead-
the ghastly, rotting cadavers.
In time, the land is slowly
decorated with similar stones,
while mistletoe grows upon the
ancient oak trees.

There is no life,
no happiness and joy;
only the sorrow, pain and grief
sung by the ominous
dark crow.

Dead ~ Uwais Coetzee

I let my feelings out
Let out all things from inside
Told you everything
My feelings no longer wanted to hide,
Although you could not listen
I still continued to speak
Spilled out everything
Like the dam wall of my heart had a leak.
Right next to you I did kneel
With tears flowing from my eyes
But now it was the time
To say our final goodbyes.
The wood began to creak
As they carried you away
The saddest day of my life
Was your funeral day.
They tapped me on the shoulder
And said "It's time to go",
I looked at them with eyes all red
And said with pain "I know".
The coffin began to lower
As they lay you down to rest
And in every single one of the speeches
They said you were one of the best.
I thought about the tears that flowed
I couldn't keep that thought at bay.
The saddest day of my life
Was your funeral day.

The Beginning of the End ~ Uwais Coetzee

The varnished wood gleamed
As if to mock me it seemed
The end was here but I was not crying
No tears flowed from my closed eyes,
But I could see everything
The clothes, the people,
Their faces,
Their tears.
Flowing for me.
The casket lay open so they could see
And people saying, with tears in their eyes
"He's going to a better place"
"He's free"
From this hell on Earth
It didn't even matter that I had finished school,
Or got the highest degree
Today is the beginning of the end,
It's the end for me.

Goddess ~ King Dopey

O thine beauty evokes the jealousy of angels
Your voice the serenade heard even by deaf ears
Intelligence beyond my understanding
With wisdom that renders King Solomon a common fool
But I am the real fool
A mere outcast such as I,
charmed by a consecrated Being such as you

Imprisoned by my own fears, insecurities, inhibitions
Walls that keep you away from me
Boundaries that take away my voice
So I can never declare how much You mean to me

They often say love is just hormones, infatuation and lust,
nothing more and unreal
But within Your presence I beg to differ
Perfection beyond divine, too great to be mirrored,
yet you are still humble above all

Heartache and depression
All because of how I feel about You
I will regret solemnly what I am about to do

Sharp blade in hand and a noose to follow through
You are a Goddess to me and your light shines through
Yet I would rather take my own life
Than have my heart rejected and broken by You...

Suicide is Not an Act of Cowardice ~ Zaynab Asmal

Don’t tell me these kids are weak
The weak would never dance the line between life and death
Would never press metal to organ, press end to life
Because the hardest part of a suicide is that final step:
The fall comes after in the dizzying rush
But before that is the knowing that it all ends
That no more oxygen will come
No more kisses or bruises, no more shame or desire
The end stretches to an infinity of uncertainty
In those last few moments, there is a lifetime
To remember each caress and clenched fist
To consider what it would be liked to be locked in a box
Six feet underground, screaming
And those that still chose to jump, to slice,
To dice open their soul to the blank cosmos
They are brave
And in pain
And have been failed
By this world
Because their choice to press delete
To end game. No save. Nothing but blank screen
No credits left to roll over dead body
That choice they make
Is done knowing their souls have already dug their graves
Have already lived in the darkest recesses of night, screaming requiems,
And our split second judgement, our careless comment
(Why didn’t they just ask for help?)
Is a brand that won’t show on the body already burning.

In Loving Memory of Siphephelo Ndimande ~ Ndabazinhle Gumbi

Reminiscing on the Nostalgic Moments I notice
The many masks you put on just for us,
Just to make our high school days a little bit more bearable;

The times your brushed off your problems and smiled just for us;

The time you packed your problems haphazardly
Spread on the floor of your mind,
So we could get a laugh out of you;

The times you got in trouble
Just so we could have something to talk about after school
The time you had to walk home alone after detention
Because you were too afraid to tell your Grandmother.

We saw you ease through high school because we didn't know your struggles.

Maybe we're cared too about our fun times that we forgot to recognise your heart aches,
Maybe we saw too many of your laughs and didn't notice your pains,
Maybe we asked too much of you when we knew too little...

Sorry it had to end like this man.

Life of a Springbok ~ Keshlin Naidoo

There runs he...
Hungrily through the precarious bush-veld.
Growling for prey
but none to be seen.

Cubs run and play,
but lion and lionesses are not seen.

What a summers day
as elephants quench their thirst thoroughly
at the wide wavy lake.

Bang, he falls,
then mourns out loud.
Oh, what a surprise!

Hunters are seen.

There is he,
dragged by them to their huts
and hanged,

He dries up,
they cheer up.

"Delicious dry meat," says them.

Teased ~ Jessica Gibbons

Teased,
Laughed at,
Told she was stupid.
And for what? Because of her hair colour?
Hurt,
Cried,
Cut.
A little thing she was born with, made her
Suicidal,
Depressed,
Unhappy.
They didn't even know,
That inside she was falling apart.
This was them. They did this.
They never knew what could come of this all,
But then again they never do.
A few simple words, ended it all.
And only once she was gone,
Did they realize what they had done.

A Few Words for a Special Friend ~ Sajna Ramdin

A golden heart stopped beating
Two twinkling eyes at rest
God broke my heart just to prove
He only takes the best

I miss your bark
I miss the sound of your feet shuffling across the tiles
I miss your mischievous ways
And how you never failed to entertain me

It's so hard doing anything without you
Wagging your tail behind me
And following me wherever I go

To some you are forgotten
To others a memory of the past
But for me
Who loved and lost you
The memory will always last

Before You Pull the Trigger ~ Rachel Sinclair

Before you pull the trigger,
Kick the stool,
Swallow those pills,
Or make the last cut.
Just think, there are so many things more.
Places to see,
People to meet,
Music to take in,
Fields to frolic through,
Books to read,
Games to win,
Art to draw,
And most importantly people to love
So why,
do you wish
to be dead?

Lethal ~ Nishka Ramkhelawan

Just when all seemed to be alright

and contentment danced

the salsa in circles...

this dark hand rises above my head

and drives it down again.

Out of the deadness

 of my distress,

anguish slowly crept its way out,

as a lethal black spider intertwined

 a weighted, diaphanous web

around the mourning that

clinched me to the casket.

My heart was sick.

This depression was lunacy

I’m insane with grief.

Without you is like living

with a lack of heat.

The fire within me

has been extinguished.

It is a burden

staggered beneath pain.

You ~ Nishka Ramkhelawan

If I could rewind time
just to be in your presence again
I would do it
at any expense it may be.
Even if it were for a moment
or two
I would give anything
Just to see you.
For the pain that you have left me with
is just too deep
That it simply cannot be summarized
in words that can be written.
I miss our everlasting conversations
and your eternal scent.

The struggles that I face
without you every single day
are struggles that I’m sure with never go away.

I miss the way you could make me smile
when nobody else could
and the way you used to
hold me tight
like I was the only one you cherished.

Time will heal everything
or at least that’s what they say
So I continually watch the clock
As time slowly fades away.

I miss those daily, inspirational messages
that I used to receive from you
And the way you could style my hair
And every day that goes on
I wish to see you there.

But now that you are gone
my heart is gone too
because I don’t think
I will meet
another person
who  will ever
compare to
you.
