See Me ~ Amahle Njilo

See me as XL.

They tell me I’m too free

Too free to be in South Africa

Too free to be a black young woman in South Africa

They tell me that they see me, they watch me.

Every waking moment I await to hear

Of another 16 year- old girl

Probably raped by her dad

Who has lost all hope for her future

And see me gliding across the room

With glinting eyes that still shimmer with hope

A hope that is never lasting

For an attack that is everlasting

And twitter tells me that stretch marks are now in style

So I stand in front of the mirror to check I still have some

And stare wearily at the person that I think I’ve become

Yet, I tell him every day, I thank him everyday

I make sure he sees his heart in me every day, his love in me everyday

And surely he isn’t real but I have to prepare because he is always watching

And see me walking home after school and hearing them whistle

And seeing the sinister lust in his eyes

See my spine shiver as I hear his name for me, making me doubt my own name

And standing in the middle of the street, stranger danger

To check if everyone can see what is happening

But realising that everyone thinks it’s a norm

Because a man always has to show his appreciation for what he sees.

And a well-rounded lady is what every African man needs.

Yet, my mother, she frets for me

She sees this young insecure girl, who thinks she is never going to make it

She is sure that she will make it

But she is afraid

Afraid that surely my boyfriend will come to our house someday and ask to help carry her groceries

And hope entirely, that he is the best boyfriend for me

But surely it will scar him to know that his love was never a part of me,

It was never linked to me because his addiction was never my addiction,

I’m entitled to sobriety.

See me as XS.

And this sobriety that can never be undone

Because when push comes to shove, I am every girl’s dream

And this time, he loves me more than ever

He said it, so I believe him.

Yet, I still feel empty on the inside, like something is missing

As he put me to sobriety when he held me down and fulfilled his sore desire

See me scream as he carries on, as if my screams are not heard

I’m the perfect type, for everyone, but that’s what is needed, right?

Because if he does not like me and if they do not like me, then what?

And see the different groups watch me with envy whenever I wear my miniskirt

They think I’m overdoing it but it shouldn’t matter

Because I think I know why I’m doing this

They see me, they watch me.

And see me hope and pray that I don’t turn into Miss Pizza Face anytime soon

Because everybody knows fresh is better

And on Instagram I almost have 5000 followers, which is pretty good

Considering I’m only 16.

And see my mother’s worried look

Because she thinks I’ve gone too far, she doesn’t know me anymore

She prays to see me walking with a nice boy who probably wears glasses

Who asks her, begs her, to help carry the groceries

So that I can see the he is the perfect guy for me,

Instead of the car I’m always dropped out of because she stopped fetching me from school

Because I told her, I could handle it.

See us united.

And see us smile and hope for the future

A future that probably never existed

A future that we think is okay.

See us walk with pride in streets that are filled with barbarians that we call our brothers

Because maybe, we are too free to be in South Africa

Maybe we are too free to be black, young women in South Africa

And maybe those are just our lives.

Being ~ Lulama Msomi

Being

I'm not happy
I am not in my element
All my dreams and aspirations have tumbled down and are now amongst the dust

More that are intelligent, gifted and bright have been discovered
I have no talent-not even kindness
I'm hurt...broken
Life is hard but I keep living
Who am I?
Am I a number...the number?
Am I still myself at her purest self?
I'm lost ...without a true sense of direction.
I want to be happy.
ALIVE!
I am not kind no I am not kind
My heart is not kind.

It's Complicated

I don't know me
I don't even know what I want
I don't even know how to express my personal woes

I don't want to be like this anymore
I don't want to feel stuck

I don't know where to start.

They won’t even know her name… ~ Meleza Jali

‘Be patient’

‘Simply agree and smile’

‘Try to understand’

These words

These words,  a mantra

These words her song

These words her laws

These words her chains

These words her unending pain

She questions herself

Why does it matter

Why does it bother her

Why, why, why

She searches

Her knees and hands

Scratched and bruised

She searches

Her eyes long tired

Her body  frail

Her soul depleted

… Revelation comes

She’ll tell you why

For it is her identity

For it is her story

For it tells her journey

For it is all she can claim

For it is she

It is her, it is her!

It is all she is

She can no longer be patient

She can no longer just agree and smile

She has understood

Understand that when death arrives

Her name shall be unveiled on the headstone

Understand that when death knocks

Her name shall be called and mourned

Understand that when death enters

Her name is all that shall remain

So write her name

Her name: a Right

Her name: a rite of passage

 “Melissa”

No

“Milisa”

No

“Meliza”

No

“Malaza”

No

I am Meleza

Meleza

Nothing else, just that.

Drunk ~ Nkazimulo Mvemve

I only had a little sip just to make me tipsy.
I never thought it would go this far.
I only went there because my friend said it would be fun.
I never thought it would go this far.
There were shots after shots I was having a great time,
but I never thought you would go that far.
I had had enough my vision was blurred,
I drank so much my stomach hurt.
I had enough and I only wanted juice,
but I didn't drink that, you must have mixed the two
Now I was totally gone walking like I needed a cane.
I was about to leave then, you came,
sat and talked next to me trying to make me stay.
I listened to you hypnotizing my brain telling me things I don't even remember.
You took me to a room laid me down and said "....."
I blacked out, not for long, but for long enough that my jeans were gone.
I looked at you filled with lust ready to do me and until I'm dust.
You wanted to take away my innocence,
just because you saw I had no control over my mind and body.
But you didn't mind.
I had the strength to make you stop but I couldn't use it
I had the voice to shout for help but I burned it shouting at something else.
I had many reasons not to come in the beginning but I couldn't listen to my own intuition.
You saw my tears, and I saw your heart.
No words, no fighting.
Just a little dot that had your reflection on
showing you the monster that you never wanted to be.
You let go, I got up you brought be water but I'm not that dumb.
I left you there thinking about what you almost did.
I dressed myself... I think I did,
but I'll never forget what you almost did.

We Have Entered the Night ~ Viyanka Moodley

We navigate our lives
Desperately searching for unknown territory

Meandering lanes of treachery and deceit
Where wealth is prioritized and righteousness, the enemy
Health is secondary to life's pitiful pleasures

As uncertainty develops
Man's existence
We look, we wonder

We hope, we expect
Glossing the reality
We dare not admit

For fear of the truth
We refuse to accept

Our disastrous existence
Remains ours to decide!

You'll Never Stop Her ~ Jowairiyya Khan

Shattered glass
Broken hearts
Lost souls
Scattered thoughts
Fallen stars
Crushed goals

Could she take anymore?
getting out of bed was a battle
The world felt like a blazing fire
Her bed, her dreams, her world...
was her sanctuary
She hoped soon people would present her obituary

She’s struggling...
Maybe with a little caring ;
She would find her way.
But that’s too hard for you
I mean, after all you think this will pass like a little flu?

Don’t worry.
Not anymore
Soon she’ll be gone

not because that lady soul wilt be reaped
But because she will fight
Without you,
She will ignite that spark that lives inside her

And when she’s on fire
Being the best she can be
Mark my words
You will never be higher.

"She wants to travel..." ~ Jowairiyya Khan

Untitled

She wants to travel
She wants to experience all the amazing qualities of this universe
She wants to feel the autumn wind on her fragile skin
She wants to feel the ocean wash away her sins
She wants to feel the roughness of the sand rub against her body
She wants to taste the almost icy looking salt on her lips
She wants to jump off a cliff...
to feel an adrenaline kick
She wants to do so many things

Yet , her sorrows , sins and anxiety stop her

When she’s on the edge
When she’s about to move
When she’s about to jump
Her mind says no
She is confined in her own little bubble
With No explanation as to why she can’t...

Strange thing
having to suffer and not know why...

The unknown monster puts her life on hold,
Keeps her chained like an animal
It makes her feel like she can live
Although, when she takes a step forward
It makes her take five steps back,
According to him
The confidence she lacks

Peculiar thing it is to live with
But I suppose without struggles
Life would just be a myth.

I Say I'm Okay ~ Uwais Coetzee

I say I'm okay.
That's what I say at least.
It's what I feel during the day.
But at night it's different.
I say I'm okay
But why am I awake
Writing a poem at 1 am?
I say I'm okay but I do depressing
Things 24/7.
I lock myself up.
Skip meals.
Don't sleep.
Overthink.
When I'm not okay
I find myself in your chat
Because the simple thought
Of us talking calms
The storm.
Even if neither one of us is making
Much of an effort
It's some comfort in
My life that doesn't seem
At all friendly.
I say I'm okay
But I don't think I am.
I know I'm not.
But I say I am.
To avoid ruining your day
Yo avoid spoiling your mood
To avoid being a nuisance
To avoid being rude.
I find myself looking back
To when things were
Actually fine.
When I wasn't a nervous wreck
When I wasn't a depressing poet.
When I wrote poems about life and love
Because I tbought that was what I felt.
But it was a mindless infatuation
With you who I knew I'd never have.
I find myself hurting myself by
Still trying to love the idea
Of escaping in our conversation.
Every word is a pain.
Every leaf is a tree.
Every smile is the same.
None of them are for me.
I know I'm not happy.
I have no idea why.
But every deep breath
Simply ends in athe sigh.
You ask how I am,
I answer in the same way.
Every day is the same thing.
I say I'm okay.

Her Story ~ Siyabonga Dlamini

She suffers...
She suffers alone...
Her mind is forever clouded with pain...death....
This is not a poem...
this is her story...

Her spirit is broken...
Her will is crushed beyond comprehension...
mine and yours...
even her own...
this is not a poem...
this is her story...

She spends her nights sleepless and in pain...
Confused...
Her mind a war zone...
trapped...
alone...
scared...
this is not a poem...
this is her story...
She sees blood everytime her eyes close...
Her heart, soul and body are dying slowly....
Claustrophobic in her spirit...
She screams but no one seems to be listening...
Slowly suffocating...
Not much life remains behind...
this is not a poem...
this is her story...

Watching her pass slowly...
My hands tied and my mind in a frenzy...
I cannot help her...
She screams but through the glass I cannot reach her...
Broken to a point of no return she dies before my eyes...
She slowly accepts her fate but I don't think I can easily let her pass...
this is not a poem...
this is her story...

The tears I try to wipe from my eyes and hers...
Her spirit I try to restore...
I try to put my arms around her...
but all seems futile...
She seems to be too far in for me to reach...
trapped in a far corner deep in her mind...
weeping and hopeless...
this is not a poem...
this is her story...

If ever the visions come to pass and her flesh turns to blood and her bones to dust...
If ever her spirit leaves this realm and disappears to nothing...
If ever she is taken from me too soon...
I will spend the rest of my days in constant confusion and suffering....
Dying more and more each day...
Sitting next to her grave until I am also... no more...
I cannot begin to explain her worth...
Or the value of her presence...
only that she lives in my mind through thick or thin....
even through death...
this is not a poem....
this is our story...

For Love ~ Two poems by Siyabonga Dlamini

...For Love...

I've tried....
I've tried...
Countless times I've tried to please you...
to be like you...
but it's too much...
I guess dark demons attract bright souls
but I often find myself wondering if there's still anything bright within my spirit?...
The luminous spark you so untimely ripped from my being like a new born...
thrown into the darkness...
My heart you blackened and struck
with each tip of the sharp words spearing from your lips...
Excuses are hurtful but false promises slander and destroy beyond comprehension...
You've left me broken and shattered just as you had found me..
but maybe worse...
maybe even more confused than before...
so let me heal myself and be whole once and for all...
My excuse is that I did it all for love...
Don't cry for me...
Don't try to save me...
for as I say all this I am already swimming in my own blood...

...Drip drop...

It flows down my wrist...
Warm and tickling my palm then my fingertips...
yet the sting on the wrist and the throbbing of the veins doesn't stop...
it's colour captivating and bright as it starts to decay...
I've never felt more alive...
